University Level
Activity Days

General

EHFSA is able to arrange suitable activity programmes at Ecton to enhance many University Level programmes.  Some details are provided below but opportunities exist for History, Social History, Archaeology and other courses.

University Course ACTIVITES

For those wishing to organise a visit to Ecton for University Course groups it is best to determine the programme at the time of booking the visit.  All of the activities shown for AL Geology and AL Chemistry are available and, as a result of previous visits by similar groups, EHFSA Tutors are able to suggest suitable additional material for University Groups.

If you select Al Geology and AL Chemistry activities for your visit then you will need to download the appropriate printed material. Click on the brown links under the activity descriptions of the Al Geology and AL Chemistry web site pages. Sufficient student sheets should be printed for members of the party, covering the topics chosen for the day’s visit.

Activities at Ecton - DOCUMENTATION

Duration

A typical activity day includes a tour of Ecton Hill to see the evidence of mining and the surface geological features as well as an underground visit to see evidence of mineral extraction and to explore the underground geological features.  Additional activities can be tailored to meet the needs of specific University courses e.g. practical investigations in engineering geology.

University Tutors can either leave the leadership of such courses to the EHFSA tutors or take the lead themselves.

Minerals-related courses
Students following minerals related courses will benefit from a visit to Ecton.  The emphasis of the visit could be geological, chemical or minerals processing.  To obtain the most from a visit to Ecton, discuss your requirements with Susan Wilkinsonin the first instance.
PGCE Students
A two-day field trip to Ecton, with overnight accommodation at a local Youth Hostel offers the opportunity for Science teachers of all disciplines to discover relevant practical activities. The social and academic educational benefits of a residential visit, where the Science relates to industrial and economic issues are experienced.  PGCE Tutors can use this as an opportunity for their students to plan an off-site visit for school students and to appreciate the importance of fieldwork in motivating children and improving learning in Science.  Again a specific programme can be tailored to the needs of the students by discussing the requirements with Susan Wilkinson.

Cost

The cost for these activities (running from around 10.00 am until 4.00 or 4.30 pm) is £10 per student per day, subject to a minimum charge of £100 per group per day. There is no charge for the statutory number staff who accompany the student group. Any additional adults will be charged at the same day rate as the pupils (£10 pp). The number of additional adults should be entered in the booking form and the booking form calculates the total charge as the numbers are entered.
