Ecton Location
Ecton lies in Staffordshire, in the south-west corner of the Peak District National Park in the valley of the River Manifold. The nearest villages are Warslow and Hartington.
Set on Ecton Hill itself, the G A Cox Study Centre, named after the late owner, and now owned by the Ecton Mine Educational Trust is used as a base for the day, providing basic field laboratory facilities enabling mineral testing, and other mineral and environmental activities. The centre is next to the “Castle”, the building with the green copper spire.
While the postcode for the Centre is DE6 2AH DO NOT use it with SatNav; you will end up on top of the hill, assuming you have vehicle that can get there!!
Click on the link below for a “Google” map of Ecton Hill. The map shows the access to Ecton Hill and the Education Centre. It can also be used to find directions to it and from it.
Click on the left-hand blue balloon, click on "Directions" and fill in your location in the table on the left. The destination will fill in automatically. The usual "Google" facilities are now available.
For those of a more traditional bent the grid reference for the layby is:
SK 097583 ( OS 1: 50,000 Sheet 119)
If you prefer even more traditional instructions you need to get to either Hartington or Warslow and then use the FinalAccess instruction sheet. (Click on FinalAccess)
For those of an even more esoteric nature the "What3Words" location of the car park is:
magnitude.detained.wades
